That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m always surprised when I see articles mentioning UCI, such as a recent BBC News piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/6174689.stm\">the water cycle in Africa<\/a> that included quotes from UCI&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ess.uci.edu\/~famiglietti\/who.htm\">Jay Famiglietti<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even more surprising was the news that UCI placed ninth in Wired&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/bodyhack\/2006\/12\/lada_adamics_re\/\">geek beauty contest<\/a>. 124 people voted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.californiastemcell.com\/Hans_Keirstead__MT_\">Hans Keirstead<\/a>, anatomy and neurobiology professor at UCI, the \u201cSexiest Geek for 2006.\u201d\u009d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vocaro.com\/trevor\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/12\/200612282106.jpg\" height=\"239\" width=\"320\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" alt=\"Hans Keirstead\" title=\"Hans Keirstead\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So does this mean our rankings will go up next year?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UCI often makes headlines in local media like The Orange County Register, but it rarely shows up on international news outlets.
